Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Family

The bright morning sun shined beautifully through the massive windows of our brand new suburban home.
It had been exactly six months since the terrifying nightmare at the freezing lake completely changed our lives.
Vanessa was convicted on multiple counts of attempted murder and fraud, sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
I officially adopted Mason, legally making him a permanent and loved member of our small family.
Lily and Mason were currently laughing loudly in the backyard, chasing our new golden retriever puppy through the grass.
I stood in the modern kitchen, happily flipping pancakes and listening to the beautiful sound of their innocent joy.
David stopped by the house to drop off the final, official custody paperwork for me to sign.
He smiled warmly, noting how incredibly healthy and happy the children looked after so much dark trauma.
I signed the legal papers with a profound sense of overwhelming relief, knowing the past was finally buried.
I poured two cups of hot coffee, and David and I walked out onto the wooden patio to watch the kids play.
Everything was finally perfect, and we were truly safe from the monsters who tried to tear us apart.
I walked down the long driveway to grab the morning mail from the shiny silver mailbox.
There was a single, heavy black envelope with absolutely no return address resting quietly at the bottom of the stack.

I ripped it open and found a high-resolution photograph of Vanessa sitting happily in her bleak prison cell, but she was holding a picture of my late first wife.
On the back of the photograph, written in familiar red ink, were words telling me that my first wife never actually died in that fiery car crash.
