Chapter 8 - The Awakening

I leaped out of my chair as the machines surrounding Emma began to chime rapidly.
Marcus rushed to my side, frozen in absolute shock as we watched our daughter.
Emma's eyelids fluttered wildly, fighting against the heavy sedation keeping her under.
Dr. Patel sprinted into the room, pushing us aside to shine a penlight into her eyes.
"She is fighting the anesthesia, she wants to wake up," Dr. Patel announced excitedly.
He quickly adjusted the medication drips, slowly weaning her off the heavy paralyzing drugs.
Ten agonizing minutes passed in suffocating silence as we waited for a miracle.
Slowly, incredibly slowly, Emma's beautiful blue eyes opened for the first time in two days.
She looked around the bright hospital room with a groggy, heavily confused expression.
"Mommy?" her tiny, fragile voice rasped through the oxygen mask.
I broke down into heavy, uncontrollable sobs and gently pressed my forehead against hers.
"I am right here, sweetheart, Mommy and Daddy are right here," I cried joyfully.
Marcus kissed her small hand, unable to form coherent words through his tears.
Dr. Patel performed a rapid neurological exam and smiled from ear to ear.
"It is a miracle, there are absolutely no signs of permanent brain damage," the doctor confirmed.
The nightmare that had destroyed our family was melting away.
We spent the next beautiful hour just holding her and watching cartoons on the small hospital TV.
The police detective arrived later that afternoon to give us the final update.
My parents and Charlotte had confessed to everything to secure a slightly lighter prison sentence.
The stolen emergency money had been refunded to our bank account by the fraud department.
Everything was finally perfect, safe, and secure.
That evening, the hospital staff moved Emma out of the ICU and into a comfortable, private pediatric recovery room.
Marcus went down to the cafeteria to finally buy us a decent, highly deserved dinner.

I was alone in the room with Emma when she suddenly looked terrified.
"Mommy, why did Aunt Charlotte tell me to jump?" Emma whispered.
