Chapter 7 - The Bribe

The entire ICU hallway went absolutely silent as Nurse Dana held up the small device.
Charlotte's smug smile vanished, instantly replaced by a look of sheer panic.
"Move out of the way, nurse, I have a signed court order," Judge Harrison demanded angrily.
Nurse Dana ignored him and pressed the play button on the audio recorder.
The crisp, clear sound of Charlotte's voice echoed loudly down the sterile hospital corridor.
"I will transfer the remaining twenty thousand dollars to your offshore account once you sign the custody order," the recording played.
Judge Harrison's voice responded on the tape, clearly agreeing to the illegal bribe.
The judge in the hallway turned pale, violently stumbling backward toward the elevators.
"I caught him taking the envelope of cash in the hospital cafeteria twenty minutes ago," Nurse Dana explained.
She had secretly slipped the recorder into his jacket pocket while pretending to bump into him.
Two police officers who were guarding the floor instantly drew their weapons and aimed them at the judge.
"You are under arrest for accepting a bribe and judicial corruption," the officer announced.
Charlotte realized her master plan was falling apart in real-time.
She shoved a medical cart toward the officers and sprinted desperately for the stairwell.
"Don't let her escape!" Marcus yelled as the police officers chased fiercely after her.
I rushed back into Emma's room, frantically helping Nurse Dana reattach the life-support monitors.
My hands trembled as I watched the steady, rhythmic rise and fall of my daughter's small chest.
We had saved her from being taken, but the battle was far from over.
Josh ran into the room, gasping for breath after following the police down the stairs.
"They caught Charlotte in the lobby, she's currently in handcuffs," Josh reported with a massive grin.
I felt a wave of absolute exhaustion wash over my entire body.
My parents and my sister were finally going to prison for their monstrous crimes.
I sat in the chair beside Emma's bed, gently holding her tiny, fragile hand in mine.
"It is over, baby girl, you are safe now," I whispered through my tears.

Suddenly, Emma's small fingers violently twitched against my palm.
The heart monitor changed its rhythm, skyrocketing in speed.
