Chapter 2 - The Dark Discovery

The doctors shocked Emma a second time, and the monitor finally registered a faint heartbeat.

Marcus buried his face in his hands, openly sobbing as the medical team stabilized her.

I stayed frozen against the glass, my eyes locked on the rhythmic rise of her chest.

Down the hallway, the police had finally arrived to escort my parents out of the hospital.

I watched the officers place my mother in handcuffs, ignoring her outraged screams.

"You will pay for this humiliation, Rebecca!" she shrieked as they dragged her toward the elevators.

I didn't care about her threats anymore, because my daughter was finally breathing again.

Dr. Patel walked out of the ICU room, peeling off his surgical gloves with a grim expression.

He pulled Marcus and me aside, his voice dropping to a serious, hushed whisper.

"Emma's heart didn't stop just because the oxygen mask was removed," he explained carefully.

My blood ran cold as I tried to process his terrifying words.

He held up a small, clear plastic IV bag that had been attached to Emma's arm.

"We found traces of a highly concentrated beta-blocker injected directly into her saline line," Dr. Patel said.

Marcus physically stumbled backward, grabbing the wall to keep himself from collapsing.

Someone had deliberately tried to stop our little girl's heart.

I instantly remembered my mother hovering over the bed before she ripped off the mask.

"It was my mother," I choked out, feeling violently sick to my stomach.

Dr. Patel nodded slowly, but his expression remained incredibly tense.

"The police are already testing the bag, but there is something else you need to see," he continued.

He pulled a small digital tablet from his coat pocket and played the room's security footage.

The grainy video showed my parents entering the room, just as I remembered.

But right behind them, slipping through the door in a nurse's scrub top, was someone else.

The figure casually walked over to Emma's IV pole while my parents distracted me.

The woman pulled down her surgical mask for just a fraction of a second.

It was my sister, Charlotte.
