Chapter 3 - The Stolen Safety

I stared at the security footage in mind-numbing disbelief.

Charlotte had been inside the ICU while my parents created a massive scene.

She was the one who actually injected the deadly medication into Emma's IV line.

Marcus clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

"I am going to kill her," Marcus growled, turning toward the hospital elevators.

Josh grabbed his brother by the shoulders, forcefully holding him back.

"If you go after her now, you'll end up in jail, and Emma needs you here," Josh pleaded.

I pulled out my phone with trembling hands to call the lead detective.

Before I could dial the number, a massive barrage of text messages flooded my screen.

They were automated fraud alerts from our joint banking institution.

I quickly logged into our banking app, and my stomach violently plummeted.

Our entire emergency savings account had been drained in a matter of minutes.

Over forty thousand dollars was simply gone, transferred to an external account.

The recipient name on the digital transfer receipt was Charlotte Wilson.

"She took everything," I whispered, showing the zero balance to my devastated husband.

Marcus snatched the phone from my hand, his eyes wide with absolute panic.

Without that money, we could not afford the specialized neurological care Emma desperately needed.

Charlotte hadn't just tried to kill my daughter; she had financially ruined us to ensure we couldn't save her.

I immediately called the bank's fraud department, begging them to reverse the massive transaction.

The representative placed me on a brief hold that felt like an absolute eternity.

When he finally returned to the line, his tone was professional and cold.

"Ma'am, the transfer was authorized using your personal security questions and a verified device," he stated.

I told him that was impossible because my phone had been with me all day.

"The authorization didn't come from your phone, ma'am," the representative explained.

He read the IP location of the device that approved the massive theft.
