Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The head nurse charged into the room with two large security guards directly behind her.

My father’s hand was still locked tightly around my bruised arm.

Nurse Dana spotted the oxygen mask lying on the floor and gasped in absolute horror.

She frantically pushed past my parents and grabbed the plastic tubing.

The alarms attached to Emma’s frail body shifted from a rapid beep to a terrifying, continuous screech.

My four-year-old daughter was flatlining.

Marcus ripped himself away from Josh and shoved my father out of the way.

He fell to his knees beside the bed while Nurse Dana began chest compressions.

"Get them out of here right now!" the head nurse roared at the security team.

One guard grabbed my father by the collar, dragging him backward into the sterile corridor.

My mother smoothed her cream-colored slacks as if she had merely spilled a glass of water.

She looked at my dying child without a single ounce of regret in her cold eyes.

"This is exactly what happens when you ignore your real family," my mother whispered to me.

I lunged for her throat, but the second security guard caught me by the waist.

"Code Blue, ICU Room 4!" a voice blared over the hospital intercom system.

A team of doctors rushed through the double doors, pushing a heavy crash cart.

I screamed Emma's name as they forced Marcus and me out into the hallway.

The heavy glass doors slammed shut, separating us from the frantic battle to save our daughter.

Josh wrapped his arms around us as we collapsed onto the cold hospital floor.

Through the glass, I watched the doctor charge the defibrillator paddles.

He yelled for everyone to stand clear before sending a massive shock into Emma's tiny chest.

Her fragile body lifted off the mattress, but the monitor remained a flat, deadly line.

My mother stood at the end of the hallway, flanked by security, watching the entire scene.

I looked up through my tears and saw something that completely shattered my sanity.

As the doctors charged the paddles for a second time, my mother was actually smiling.
