Chapter 5 - The Dark Confession

I spun around to find my father standing in the shadows of our backyard.
He wasn't wearing handcuffs anymore, meaning the police had already released him on bail.
He was holding a heavy steel crowbar tightly in his right hand.
"How could you do this to your own granddaughter?" I screamed, stepping in front of Marcus.
My father let out a cold, dismissive laugh that sent shivers down my spine.
"Emma was always a massive mistake, Rebecca," he said with absolutely no emotion.
He slowly walked toward us, tapping the heavy crowbar against his leg.
"Your grandfather's massive trust fund unlocks in exactly two days," he explained calmly.
My mind raced, remembering the old will my wealthy grandfather had drafted before his death.
"The trust clearly stated that the entire estate goes to the first grandchild to turn five," my father continued.
I gasped as the horrifying puzzle pieces snapped into place.
Emma was turning five this coming Friday, exactly one week before Charlotte's daughter, Madison.
If Emma survived until her birthday, she would inherit thirty million dollars, leaving Charlotte with nothing.
"Charlotte deserves that money, she has always been the better daughter," my father sneered.
He raised the heavy crowbar, preparing to strike Marcus in the head.
I aggressively lunged forward, tackling my own father into the wet grass.
He grunted in pain but quickly shoved me off, raising his weapon once more.
Suddenly, a blinding spotlight illuminated the entire backyard.
"Drop the weapon and put your hands in the air!" a police officer commanded through a megaphone.
Two officers rushed through the side gate with their service weapons drawn.
My father dropped the crowbar, throwing his hands up with a perfectly faked look of terror.
"Thank God you're here, my daughter and her husband just attacked me!" my father lied flawlessly.
The officer ignored him and violently kicked the back of my father's knees, sending him to the ground.
"We heard the entire confession, Mr. Davis," the female officer said, handcuffing him tightly.
I let out a massive breath of relief, leaning heavily against Marcus for support.

My phone suddenly buzzed in my pocket with an urgent text message from Josh.
The text read: 'Charlotte is back at the hospital, and she brought a judge with her.'
