Chapter 9 - The Kidnapping

The floor seemed to drop completely out from under me.

I gripped the edge of the reception desk to keep myself from collapsing.

I screamed that it was absolutely impossible.

Mia’s father had died in a tragic car accident before she was even born.

Marcus immediately demanded to see the court order the man had presented.

The terrified receptionist slid a piece of paper across the counter.

Marcus scanned it quickly, his professional demeanor cracking into genuine alarm.

He pointed to the signature at the bottom of the page.

The document had been signed by the exact same judge we had just left in the courtroom.

But the timestamp showed it was signed three days ago.

Vanessa had not just planned a courtroom setup; she had executed a secondary backup plan.

She had forged legal documents and hired someone to impersonate a dead man to kidnap my daughter.

I pulled out my phone and tried to call the police, but my hands were shaking so badly I dropped it.

Marcus picked up the phone and dialed the police commissioner directly.

Within minutes, an amber alert was blasting across every cell phone in the state.

We ran out to Marcus's car and sped toward the local police precinct.

My mind was a dark, spiraling vortex of horrific possibilities.

If Vanessa had hired a professional to take Mia, I might never see her again.

We burst into the detective's bullpen, demanding an update on the search.

Detective Harris, the same man who had interrogated me days ago, looked grim.

He told us they had pulled the security footage from the foster facility's parking lot.

They had identified the license plate of the black sedan that took Mia.

Harris revealed that the car was registered to a man named David Vance.

I gasped, recognizing the name immediately.

David Vance was Vanessa’s ex-husband, a man with a long history of violence and gambling debts.

Vanessa must have promised him a cut of the ten million dollar trust fund in exchange for kidnapping Mia.

Harris dispatched heavily armed SWAT teams to every known address associated with David Vance.

Hours ticked by like absolute torture.

I sat in the precinct, staring at a picture of Mia on my phone, praying to a God I hadn’t spoken to in years.

Finally, at midnight, Harris’s radio crackled to life.

A tactical unit had located the black sedan parked outside an abandoned warehouse near the docks.

Marcus and I jumped into a police cruiser, following the convoy of sirens toward the harbor.

When we arrived, the warehouse was completely surrounded by flashing red and blue lights.

SWAT operators had already breached the front doors.

I heard the terrifying sound of three gunshots echoing from inside the metal building.

I tried to run toward the entrance, but Marcus held me back.

A moment later, a massive SWAT officer emerged from the shadows of the warehouse.

He was carrying a small, crying figure wrapped in a heavy tactical jacket.
