Chapter 6 - The Setup

I stared at the legal document, my hands trembling uncontrollably.

The matching dress was never the real issue.

Vanessa’s insane jealousy was just a convenient cover for a calculated, multi-million dollar theft.

She had orchestrated the entire dinner disaster to trigger a custody battle just weeks before Mia’s fifth birthday.

I looked at Marcus and asked where my Aunt Claire was right now.

Marcus kept his eyes on the dark road ahead.

He revealed that Claire was currently in the intensive care unit.

Vanessa had not just taken her phone; she had pushed the older woman down a flight of stairs to make it look like a tragic accident.

My stomach churned with pure disgust.

Vanessa was willing to kill our own aunt and burn my child just to get her hands on that trust fund.

I told Marcus we needed to go to my mother’s house right now and take Mia back by force.

Marcus firmly stated that doing so would violate my bail conditions and land me back in jail instantly.

He explained that we needed undeniable proof that Vanessa had premeditated the attack.

I racked my brain, trying to remember every single detail of that horrific Sunday.

Then, a sudden memory flashed in my mind.

Vanessa claimed she was furious because Mia copied Sophie’s dress.

But I remembered seeing the receipt sticking out of Vanessa’s purse when she arrived at the house.

The time stamp on the store receipt was from that exact same morning.

I had bought Mia’s dress two weeks ago on clearance.

Vanessa had purposely hunted down a matching outfit for Sophie just hours before the dinner.

It was a deliberate setup designed to provoke a confrontation.

I told Marcus about the receipt, and he immediately made a phone call to a private investigator.

He ordered the investigator to pull the security footage from the children's boutique in the mall.

We parked outside a cheap motel where Marcus had booked me a room under a fake name.

He promised to pick me up for the emergency custody hearing the next morning.

I spent the entire night pacing the stained carpet, praying that my little girl was safe.

At dawn, Marcus knocked on my door, holding a laptop.

He opened it and played the security footage from the boutique.

The video clearly showed Vanessa purchasing the matching dress.

But she was not alone in the store.

My mother was standing right next to her, handing the cashier the credit card to pay for it.

They had planned the attack together.
