Chapter 2 - The Emergency Room

I did not wait for an apology or an explanation.
I scooped my sobbing daughter into my arms and bolted out the front door.
The cold night air hit us, but Mia was still wailing in absolute agony.
I strapped her into her car seat, my hands shaking so badly I could barely buckle the harness.
I ignored all the speed limits as I drove frantically toward the nearest hospital.
Mia’s cries were piercing my heart with every passing second.
I kept looking in the rearview mirror, promising her that we were almost there.
When we crashed through the emergency room doors, the nurses immediately took one look at us and called for a trauma doctor.
They gently cut away the ruined blue dress to examine the burns on her arms and chest.
I stood in the corner of the sterile room, completely paralyzed by guilt and overwhelming rage.
Dr. Evans, an older man with kind eyes, carefully treated her blistered skin.
He gave her a strong painkiller, and Mia finally stopped crying, drifting into a restless sleep.
The doctor walked over to me, holding a clipboard tightly against his chest.
He told me that Mia had suffered second-degree burns, but she was going to survive without severe scarring.
I let out a breath that I felt like I had been holding since we left the house.
I thanked him repeatedly, tears streaming down my face.
Dr. Evans did not smile back.
He looked at me with a very cold, clinical expression.
He explained that the splatter pattern of the burns was highly unusual for an accidental spill.
I nodded vigorously, telling him that my sister had thrown the boiling pan on purpose.
I expected him to look shocked or to ask for more details.
Instead, he stepped back and signaled to someone standing in the hallway.
Two uniformed police officers walked into the hospital room.
I felt a wave of relief, assuming they were here to take my statement against Vanessa.
I took a step forward, ready to tell them everything that had happened at that toxic dinner table.
The taller officer placed his hand firmly on his utility belt.
He asked me to confirm my identity.
I said my name was Rachel, and I was Mia's mother.
The officer pulled a pair of heavy metal handcuffs from his belt.
He told me that I was under arrest for aggravated child abuse.
I froze, completely unable to process the words coming out of his mouth.
He grabbed my wrists and pulled them behind my back.

The officer stated that they had just received a frantic 911 call from my mother.
According to the official report, my mother claimed that I was the one who threw the boiling oil at Sophie, but I missed and hit my own daughter instead.
