Chapter 3 - The False Witnesses

The cold metal cuffs clicked shut around my wrists.
I pleaded with the officers, screaming that my mother was lying to protect Vanessa.
They ignored my desperate protests and dragged me out of the pediatric ward.
I looked back over my shoulder, watching Mia sleep peacefully in the hospital bed.
I was terrified of what would happen to her if I was taken to jail.
They shoved me into the back of a police cruiser.
The ride to the precinct was a blur of neon lights and blinding panic.
When we arrived, they locked me in a gray, windowless interrogation room.
I sat alone for two excruciating hours, my mind racing through every possible scenario.
Finally, a tired-looking detective walked into the room holding a thick manila folder.
He introduced himself as Detective Harris and sat down across from me.
I begged him to check the hospital records and listen to my side of the story.
Harris sighed heavily and opened the folder.
He slid a glossy photograph across the metal table.
It was a picture of Vanessa, sitting in a different hospital, with severe burn marks completely covering her right arm.
I stared at the photo in absolute shock.
Vanessa did not have a single scratch on her when I fled the house with Mia.
Harris leaned forward, his eyes full of deep suspicion.
He told me that Vanessa had been admitted to the burn unit shortly after I left.
According to her sworn statement, I had snapped in a jealous rage.
She claimed that I threw the boiling skillet at her, and the splashing oil hit my own child.
My mother had fully corroborated the entire story, swearing under oath that she saw me do it.
I shook my head violently, telling the detective that Vanessa must have burned herself on purpose to frame me.
Harris looked at me like I was completely insane.
He asked why a mother would intentionally disfigure herself just to get her sister in trouble over a child's dress.
I tried to explain the years of toxic jealousy, but it sounded completely absurd spoken out loud.
Harris closed the folder and stood up from the table.
He informed me that the district attorney was officially pressing felony charges against me.
Even worse, he said Child Protective Services had already been notified.
I slammed my cuffed hands onto the table, begging him not to let them take my daughter.
He opened the door to leave, pausing in the doorframe.
Harris told me that Mia had already been discharged from the hospital.
I felt a sudden surge of hope, thinking she was placed in a safe foster home.
Then the detective delivered the crushing blow.

He stated that since my mother was a direct relative with a clean record, CPS had placed Mia in her temporary legal custody.
My daughter was currently sleeping in the same house as the monster who had tried to burn her alive.
