Chapter 7 - The Custody Hearing

I rode with Marcus to the county courthouse in complete silence.
The weight of my mother’s betrayal was almost heavier than the fear of losing my daughter.
She had actively participated in a plot to disfigure her own granddaughter for money.
We walked through the heavy wooden doors of the courtroom.
Vanessa and my mother were already sitting at the opposing table.
Vanessa’s arm was wrapped in thick, white medical bandages, playing the role of the tragic victim perfectly.
My mother refused to make eye contact with me.
The judge entered the room and banged his gavel, calling the emergency custody hearing to order.
Vanessa’s lawyer stood up and painted a horrifying picture of me.
He called me a violent, unstable woman who was deeply jealous of my sister's perfect family.
He officially requested that Mia be permanently placed in Vanessa’s care for her own safety.
Marcus stood up slowly, buttoning his suit jacket with complete confidence.
He approached the bench and handed the judge a flash drive.
Marcus explained that this drive contained security footage from the children's boutique.
He played the video on the courtroom monitor, showing Vanessa and my mother buying the exact matching dress on the morning of the incident.
Vanessa’s face went pale, but her lawyer quickly objected.
He argued that buying a dress was not a crime and did not prove I didn't throw the boiling oil.
Marcus smiled faintly and turned to face my mother.
He formally requested to call my mother to the witness stand.
My mother looked terrified as she swore on the Bible to tell the truth.
Marcus paced in front of the stand, his voice sharp and commanding.
He asked my mother to confirm her official police statement.
She nervously repeated that she saw me pick up the skillet and throw it at Vanessa.
Marcus then pulled out a blown-up photograph of the dining room taken by crime scene investigators.
He pointed to a large, decorative mirror hanging on the wall behind the dining table.
Marcus asked my mother to look very closely at the reflection in the mirror.
The entire courtroom leaned in to look at the photograph.
The mirror clearly reflected the ceiling directly above the dining table.
Mounted on the ceiling, completely hidden inside a smoke detector, was a blinking red light.
My father, who had passed away three years ago, was incredibly paranoid about burglaries.
He had secretly installed a hidden surveillance camera in the dining room that recorded straight to a secure hard drive in the basement.

Marcus looked directly at Vanessa and delivered the fatal blow.
"We recovered the hard drive this morning, and it captured the entire dinner in high definition," Marcus announced.
