Chapter 4 - The Only Evidence

The heavy metal door slammed shut, leaving me alone in the interrogation room.
My chest heaved as I struggled to breathe through the overwhelming panic.
Mia was trapped in that house with Vanessa and my mother.
I knew they would manipulate her, frighten her, and possibly hurt her again to keep their story straight.
I had to get out of this jail cell before it was too late.
I banged on the door until a guard finally came and allowed me one phone call.
I did not call a lawyer.
I called the only person who had been in that dining room who was not completely insane.
I dialed my Aunt Claire's cell phone number.
It rang four times before going to a generic voicemail box.
I hung up and called back, praying that she would answer.
On the third ring, I heard a quiet click.
I frantically whispered her name into the receiver.
Aunt Claire’s voice trembled as she spoke, sounding terrified.
She told me she was hiding in her own bathroom with the door locked.
I asked her what was going on and why she was hiding.
She explained that she saw exactly what Vanessa did at the dinner table.
More importantly, she reminded me that she had been recording a video of the girls spinning in their dresses.
She had forgotten to turn her camera off when Vanessa followed me into the dining room.
Aunt Claire had captured the entire incident, including the audio of Vanessa threatening me.
My heart soared with a sudden, desperate hope.
I told her she had to bring that phone to the police station immediately.
Claire started crying, saying she could not leave her house.
She whispered that my mother had realized the camera was recording during the fight.
My mother and Vanessa had shown up at Claire's house ten minutes ago to demand the phone.
Claire had locked herself in the master bathroom, but they were currently trying to break the door down.
I heard the sound of heavy pounding echoing through the phone line.
I screamed at Claire to call 911 on another line.
She cried that she could not, because her phone battery was at one percent.
The pounding on her bathroom door turned into a loud, splintering crack.
I heard Vanessa’s unhinged voice screaming for Claire to hand over the device.
Then the phone line went completely dead.
I dropped the receiver, my blood running cold.
May you like
Vanessa was not just a jealous sister anymore.
She was a dangerous criminal destroying evidence, and I was trapped behind bars with no way to stop her.
