Chapter 5 - The Bailout

I paced the tiny holding cell like a caged animal.

Every minute that passed was another minute Vanessa had to destroy the only evidence that could save me and my daughter.

I needed to post bail, but my bank accounts had been frozen due to the felony charges.

The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, driving me closer to the edge of absolute despair.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the cell block swung open.

A guard walked down the corridor and stopped in front of my cell.

He unlocked the bars and told me to grab my belongings.

I stared at him, confused, asking if there had been a mistake.

The guard stated that my bail had just been paid in full in cash.

I followed him out to the processing desk, my mind racing to figure out who could have afforded the fifty thousand dollar bond.

Standing at the front desk was a tall man in a sharp, tailored suit.

It was Marcus, a high-powered corporate attorney who had handled my late father's estate.

I had not seen Marcus in over three years.

He handed me my personal items in a plastic bag and motioned for me to follow him outside.

The cold night air hit my face as we walked toward his black sedan.

I asked him why he was here and who had hired him.

Marcus opened the car door for me and glanced around the empty parking lot.

He told me that my Aunt Claire had contacted him hours ago, right before her phone died.

She had managed to upload the video of the incident to a secure cloud drive before Vanessa broke down the bathroom door.

I felt a massive wave of relief wash over my entire body.

I asked Marcus if we could take the video straight to the police to clear my name.

He shook his head solemnly, putting the car into gear.

He explained that Vanessa and my mother had already filed a secondary police report.

They claimed that Aunt Claire was suffering from severe dementia and was conspiring with me to frame them.

The police were treating the uploaded video with heavy skepticism, believing it might be a deepfake.

I slammed my hands against the dashboard in pure frustration.

I asked Marcus why Vanessa was going to such extreme, psychotic lengths just over a matching dress.

Marcus pulled a thick legal document from his briefcase and handed it to me.

He told me to read the highlighted section on the second page.

It was a copy of my late father’s secret trust fund agreement.

The document stated that upon Mia's fifth birthday, she would inherit a staggering ten million dollar estate.

However, there was a specific clause hidden at the bottom of the page.

If I was ever deemed an unfit mother or convicted of a felony, full custody of Mia and control of her trust fund would automatically transfer to my older sister, Vanessa.
