Chapter 9 - The Double Cross

My mother completely froze, her eyes widening in absolute, horrified disbelief.
"Richard, what are you doing?" she gasped, her hands shaking so badly she nearly dropped her pistol.
"I am tying up all the loose ends, Patricia," my father replied with a chillingly calm demeanor.
"When the police find this room, they will deduce that you went crazy and shot the intruders before turning the gun on yourself."
He openly admitted that he planned to take the hard drive, flee to the Cayman Islands, and leave her to take the entire fall.
"You are a coward!" my mother screamed, violently spinning around to face him.
In that split second of chaotic distraction, Detective Vance lunged forward from the floor.
He kicked my mother's wrist with devastating precision, sending her suppressed pistol flying across the room.
Detective Miller simultaneously tackled my father, slamming him aggressively against the heavy mahogany desk.
The silver revolver fired blindly into the ceiling, showering us all with white plaster and drywall dust.
I dove behind the heavy armchair, covering Arthur's body to protect him from the dangerous ricochet.
The classical music from the ballroom abruptly stopped, replaced by the terrified screams of the wealthy gala guests.
Outside the mansion, the deafening wail of heavily armed federal tactical vehicles completely surrounded the property.
Sarah had successfully forwarded the cartel evidence from the safe house directly to a federal task force.
My father viciously elbowed Miller in the jaw, managing to break entirely free from the detective's grip.
He frantically grabbed the portable hard drive containing the offshore accounts from the floor.
Desperate and completely out of options, my father grabbed Arthur by the collar and pulled him forcefully to his feet.

He pressed a shard of broken glass against my brother's throat, slowly backing toward the open terrace doors.
"If anyone takes a single step closer, the boy dies right here!" my father roared into the night air.
