Chapter 3 - The Smear Campaign

Detective Miller immediately locked the hospital room door and barricaded it with a heavy chair.

"We have to move Daniela out of this building right now," Miller declared urgently.

"If the country club assassin fails to report back, your mother will send someone else."

Sarah quickly gathered the blue folder and shoved it safely into her leather briefcase.

"I have a secure safe house outside the city limits," Vance offered, pulling me carefully out of the hospital bed.

I winced in agony as my broken ribs protested the sudden movement.

Sarah draped a heavy winter coat over my hospital gown to conceal my identity.

We slipped out through the hospital's underground loading dock and climbed into an unmarked police vehicle.

The drive to the safe house was tense, silent, and suffocatingly dark.

When we finally arrived at a secluded cabin in the woods, Vance immediately turned on the small television in the corner.

He wanted to check the local news channels for any reports of a disturbance at the hospital.

Instead, my own face flashed across the high definition screen.

The breaking news banner at the bottom read, "Wealthy Heiress Wanted for Vicious Assault and Grand Larceny."

My mother and father were standing at a press conference podium, looking entirely distraught and weeping openly.

My father leaned into the microphones, his voice cracking with perfectly rehearsed emotion.

"Our daughter Daniela has been struggling with severe substance abuse for years," he lied effortlessly to the cameras.

"Last night, she broke into our home, stole millions from the family trust, and violently attacked us when we tried to intervene."

My mother wiped away a fake tear, showing the cameras a staged bruise on her own cheek.

"We just want her found safely before she hurts herself or anyone else," she sobbed.

I fell backward onto the dusty sofa, completely paralyzed by the sheer audacity of their lies.

They were framing me for the very crime they had committed.

By painting me as a violent, drug-addicted thief, they completely discredited any accusations I might make against them.

The news anchor returned to the screen with a grave expression.

"The Chief of Police has officially issued a state-wide warrant for Daniela's arrest," the anchor announced.

"Citizens are advised not to approach her, as she is considered highly armed and dangerous."

Miller and Vance looked at each other, the grim reality of our situation sinking in.

The two detectives had just kidnapped a wanted fugitive, making them accessories to a highly publicized crime.
