Chapter 7 - The Belly of the Beast

"Dad, I was just looking for a pen," Arthur lied, his voice trembling as he stepped away from the server.

My father did not believe him for a single second.

He swung the golf club violently, smashing the computer monitor into pieces and instantly severing our video connection.

The screen went completely black, leaving me in a state of absolute, blind panic.

"He caught him," I cried out to the detectives.

"We have to get inside that house right now before he hurts Arthur."

Miller accelerated the stolen sedan, tearing through the pristine, tree-lined streets of the Greenwich estate district.

When we arrived at the perimeter of my family's massive property, we noticed dozens of luxury cars parked outside.

My parents were hosting their annual charity gala, using the crowded event as a perfect public alibi.

"This works to our advantage," Vance noted, checking the loaded magazine of his sidearm.

"The security guards will be distracted by the wealthy guests in the main ballroom."

We slipped through the tall hedges and approached the darkened servant's entrance near the kitchen.

Miller and Vance expertly subdued a lone security guard, dragging him quietly into the bushes.

Sarah stayed outside with the getaway car while the detectives and I infiltrated the massive house.

The sound of classical string music echoed faintly from the extravagant party happening in the front rooms.

We moved silently down the long, carpeted hallway leading directly to my father's private study.

I pushed the heavy mahogany door open, my heart hammering violently against my bruised ribs.

The room was in total disarray, with shattered glass and torn documents covering the expensive rug.

Arthur was sitting tied to a heavy leather armchair in the corner, his mouth gagged with a silk tie.

I rushed forward to untie my terrified brother, tears of relief flooding my eyes.

Before my fingers could even touch the tight knots, the heavy study door clicked loudly shut.

The deadbolt engaged with a sickening, definitive thud.

My mother stepped out from the dark shadows of the curtained window, looking completely pristine in an elegant evening gown.

In her perfectly manicured right hand, she held a suppressed, matte black pistol aimed directly at my chest.
