Chapter 4 - The Burner Phone

The silence in the safe house was absolutely deafening following the news broadcast.
Detective Miller aggressively turned off the television, his face red with mounting frustration.
"Your parents just weaponized the entire police department against you," Miller said, pacing the wooden floorboards.
"We cannot call for backup because our own captain probably signed that arrest warrant."
Sarah pulled the blue folder out of her briefcase and spread the documents across the kitchen table.
"Then we use the only advantage we have left," Sarah stated with fierce determination.
"We follow the money trail before they can completely erase it."
She pulled out the burner phone they had confiscated from the fake nurse at the hospital.
Vance connected the device to his laptop and ran a rapid decryption software program.
"Your parents are smart, but they are incredibly arrogant," Vance muttered as lines of code scrolled across his screen.
"They used this same encrypted network to authorize the trust fund transfers."
I walked over to the screen, ignoring the sharp, stabbing pain in my chest.
"Can you see exactly where the millions of dollars ended up?" I asked anxiously.
Vance clicked a final button, revealing a hidden offshore bank account registered in the Cayman Islands.
The registered owner of the account was not my father or my mother.
It belonged to a shell corporation directly tied to the Reyes Cartel, a notoriously violent international crime syndicate.
My parents had not just been stealing money for luxury cars and vacations.
They had been laundering millions of dollars for ruthless drug lords using my grandparents' trust fund as a clean front.
"This explains why they are so desperate to silence you," Sarah gasped, covering her mouth in shock.
"If the cartel finds out you uncovered the paper trail, they will kill your parents for compromising the operation."
Suddenly, the motion sensor lights attached to the front porch of the cabin flared violently to life.
Vance slammed his laptop shut and instantly drew his weapon.
"Get down on the floor right now!" he screamed.
Before anyone could react, the front window shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.
A heavy, metallic cylinder rolled across the wooden floorboards, hissing ominously.

Thick, blinding white smoke began pouring out of the tear gas canister, instantly filling the room.
The cartel had already found us.
