Chapter 8 - The Confession

My mother laughed softly, the exact same cruel, echoing sound she had made in the alley.

"I knew your bleeding heart would bring you back for the boy," she sneered, gesturing toward Arthur.

Detective Miller and Vance raised their weapons, but they were trapped in the tight quarters of the room.

"Drop your guns on the floor, or I will put a bullet straight through Daniela's skull," my mother threatened coldly.

The detectives reluctantly lowered their firearms, sliding them across the hardwood floor to protect me.

I slowly raised my hands, secretly pressing the hidden record button on my smartwatch.

"Why are you doing this, Mom?" I asked loudly, needing her to openly admit her crimes to the microphone.

"Because you could not just leave the trust fund alone, you stupid girl," she spat angrily.

"We needed that cartel money to maintain our lifestyle, and you were going to ruin everything."

She proudly confessed to beating me, framing me on national television, and hiring the fake nurse.

She detailed every single wire transfer and illegal offshore account with terrifying, arrogant pride.

"And now, you are going to tragically overdose in this study alongside your corrupt detective friends," she concluded.

My smartwatch buzzed slightly on my wrist, confirming that the entire confession had been successfully recorded.

Suddenly, the hidden door behind the bookshelf swung open, and my father stepped into the room.

He was holding the portable hard drive Arthur had managed to copy before being caught.

"Do you have the files securely, Richard?" my mother asked, keeping her gun focused entirely on me.

"Yes, Patricia, I have everything we need," my father replied smoothly.

He walked up behind her, seemingly ready to help her execute the final phase of their sinister plan.

Instead of pointing a weapon at me, my father slowly drew a silver revolver from his jacket.

He pivoted sharply and pressed the cold barrel directly against the back of my mother's head.

"I am sorry, darling, but the cartel demands absolute perfection," my father whispered into her ear.

"You have simply become too much of a liability to keep alive."
