Chapter 6 - The Inside Man

The police vehicle was too dangerous to drive, so we abandoned it in a desolate parking lot near the highway.

Miller managed to hotwire an old sedan from a nearby used car lot to keep us moving untracked.

As we drove toward the wealthy suburbs of Greenwich, I borrowed Sarah's phone to make a crucial call.

The mansion's security system was military grade, and we needed someone on the inside to bypass the alarms.

I dialed the private number of my younger brother, Arthur, praying he would actually answer.

Arthur was only nineteen, and he had always been completely oblivious to our parents' dark business dealings.

He picked up on the third ring, his voice thick with confusion and genuine worry.

"Daniela, where are you?" Arthur asked frantically.

"Mom and Dad said you went crazy and tried to kill them."

"Arthur, listen to me very carefully," I pleaded, keeping my voice as steady as humanly possible.

"They are lying to you, and they are trying to frame me to cover up massive financial crimes."

I quickly explained the trust fund embezzlement, the violent assault, and the cartel connection.

There was a long, terrifying silence on the other end of the line.

"I believe you," Arthur finally whispered, sounding completely heartbroken.

"What do you need me to do to help?"

I instructed him to sneak into our father's mahogany study and access the master server drive hidden in the floor safe.

"The passcode is Mom's maiden name followed by your birth year," I told him.

"Copy the entire video directory onto a portable hard drive and leave the back terrace door unlocked for us."

Arthur set his phone on the desk, leaving the video call active so I could monitor his progress.

I watched through the small screen as he successfully opened the heavy metal safe.

He quickly plugged a flash drive into the server and began downloading the files.

The progress bar on the screen slowly ticked past fifty percent, agonizingly sluggish.

Suddenly, the heavy wooden door of the study swung open behind him.

I held my breath as my father stepped into the frame, holding a heavy iron golf club.

He looked completely unhinged, his expensive suit rumpled and his eyes wide with manic paranoia.

"Who are you talking to, Arthur?" my father asked, raising the iron club menacingly.
