Chapter 9 - The Ghost Arrives

Dominic's voice cracked with perfectly practiced emotion as he described the immense pain of losing his soulmate.

The wealthy guests in the pews dabbed their eyes with expensive tissues, completely buying into his theatrical performance.

I stepped out from behind the heavy velvet curtains, my boots echoing loudly against the polished marble floor.

I was still wearing the torn, blood-stained tactical sweater and the snow-covered boots from the mountain.

The somber music screeched to a sudden halt, and a collective gasp of sheer terror rippled through the massive cathedral.

People shoved backward in their wooden pews, screaming as they stared at a woman they believed was burned to ashes.

I walked slowly down the center aisle, holding the rusted metal padlock high in the air for everyone to see.

I looked directly at my terrified husband and calmly apologized for my delay, claiming that the traffic was absolutely murder.

Dominic turned the color of chalk, his knees buckling slightly as he gripped the wooden podium for support.

Chloe shrieked in horror and desperately tried to run toward the side exit, but the heavy doors were already sealed.

I tossed the heavy padlock onto the floor, letting the metallic clang echo in the dead silence of the room.

I loudly declared to the entire congregation that my husband had locked me in a freezing cabin to steal my life insurance.

The corrupt military police officers suddenly rushed down the aisles, drawing their weapons and aiming them directly at my head.

The corrupt general stood up from the front pew and ordered the guards to shoot me for resisting arrest.

I stood perfectly still in the center of the crosshairs, completely unfazed by the guns pointed at my chest.

Dominic suddenly began to laugh hysterically, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small electronic detonator.
