Chapter 3 - The Dead Speak

I held the cold radio near my mouth and listened to my treacherous husband breathe heavily on the other end of the line.

He frantically begged the mercenary to confirm that my body was secured and ready for the staged avalanche.

I pressed the transmission button but remained absolutely silent, letting the dead air amplify his growing paranoia.

Dominic cursed violently and abruptly ended the connection, realizing something had gone terribly wrong on the mountain.

I strapped the mercenary’s thermal rifle across my back and checked the ammunition magazine.

The contractor also carried a set of keys with a yellow plastic tag shaped like a snowmobile.

I walked outside and followed the mercenary’s tracks backward into the dense pine forest.

About a half-mile away, hidden beneath a camouflage tarp, I found a military-grade snowmobile fully fueled and ready.

I brushed the snow off the leather seat and inserted the key into the frozen ignition switch.

My survival training kicked in, urging me to inspect the vehicle before starting the engine.

I knelt in the snow and ran my hands under the chassis, feeling for anything out of the ordinary.

My fingers brushed against a thick cluster of plastic wiring wired directly to the fuel line.

It was a remote-detonated explosive charge packed with enough C4 to vaporize the entire vehicle.

Dominic had paid this mercenary to kill me, but he had also rigged the snowmobile to kill the mercenary.

He was meticulously tying up loose ends to ensure nobody could ever blackmail him for the murder.

I carefully used my ceramic blade to sever the detonator wire, rendering the explosive entirely useless.

I started the engine, fully intending to ride this machine all the way back to the city to ruin his life.

Just as the headlights flickered on, a massive explosion erupted from the abandoned cabin behind me, sending a shockwave through the trees.
