Chapter 4 - The Long Walk

The deafening blast echoed through the valley as the cabin was completely engulfed in a towering pillar of orange fire.

Dominic had remotely triggered a secondary explosive hidden inside the cabin just to be absolutely certain I was dead.

I watched the flames lick the dark sky and realized my husband was far more dangerous than I had ever imagined.

I revved the snowmobile engine and tore through the wilderness, navigating the treacherous mountain terrain using only the moonlight.

I drove for three grueling hours, fighting against the biting wind and the blinding snowfall.

The fuel gauge eventually hit empty just as I reached the edge of a deserted, snow-covered highway.

I abandoned the machine in a frozen ditch and began the long, agonizing walk toward a flickering neon sign in the distance.

It was an isolated gas station, completely empty except for a tired cashier sleeping behind the counter.

I stepped inside, bringing a gust of freezing wind that caused the small bell above the door to ring loudly.

I walked straight to the bathroom to wash the dried blood and soot off my freezing face.

I stared at my reflection in the cracked mirror, barely recognizing the hardened, vengeful woman looking back at me.

I walked out to the main counter and grabbed a hot cup of black coffee to raise my core temperature.

I glanced up at the small television mounted in the corner of the ceiling playing the morning news.

The breaking news ticker at the bottom of the screen displayed my full name in bold letters.

The news anchor solemnly announced that my tragic death in a sudden mountain avalanche had just been confirmed by local authorities.

My heart stopped completely when the screen showed footage of a body bag being loaded into a coroner's van.
