Chapter 6 - The Unlikely Ally

I kept my hands perfectly still on the steering wheel and prepared to disarm the officer the moment he drew his weapon.

The cop stared at me for a long, agonizing second before slowly lowering his blinding flashlight.

He let out a heavy sigh and pulled the hood of his winter jacket back to reveal a jagged scar across his chin.

His name was Sergeant Miller, a former rookie I had personally trained during a grueling special operations selection course five years ago.

Miller whispered that the entire state police force had been fed a classified bulletin labeling me as a rogue, armed terrorist.

He explained that the corrupt general working with Chloe’s family had completely hijacked the local chain of command.

Miller refused to believe the bulletin because he knew I would never betray the uniform I had bled for.

He told me to abandon the stolen truck immediately and get into the back of his police cruiser where the cameras could not see me.

I slipped out of the rusty cab and crawled into the secure backseat of his vehicle, completely hidden from passing traffic.

Miller drove aggressively toward the city limits, bypassing three different heavily armed military checkpoints using his police clearance.

He handed me a classified Manila folder he had stolen from the precinct captain's desk that morning.

I opened the file and read through a series of forged bank transfers and expedited insurance claims.

Dominic had not even waited for my fake body to get cold before he cashed out my entire life insurance policy.

He had collected over two million dollars and spent a hundred thousand of it to fund a lavish, theatrical funeral for tomorrow.

Miller turned around in the driver's seat and handed me a loaded tactical pistol.

He warned me that the funeral at the grand cathedral was going to be guarded by a dozen corrupt military police officers.
