Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

I checked the weight and balance of the pistol, feeling a dangerous sense of calm wash over my mind.

Miller dropped me off near the perimeter of my own upscale neighborhood just as the sun began to set.

I moved silently through the familiar back alleys, avoiding the security cameras I had personally installed around my property.

I picked the lock on my own back door and slipped into the dark, quiet kitchen like a ghost haunting its own grave.

The house smelled of expensive champagne and the overpowering floral perfume that Chloe always wore.

I crept up the carpeted stairs and saw the soft glow of a laptop screen coming from my private study.

I peeked around the doorframe and saw Chloe sitting at my heavy oak desk, aggressively typing on a digital keypad.

She was speaking on her cell phone with the corrupt general, laughing about how perfectly their brutal plan had worked.

I activated the hidden recording device inside my watch and captured every single word of her vile confession.

Chloe bragged to the general that Dominic was a gullible fool who had willingly signed his own death warrant.

She revealed that she planned to poison Dominic with a lethal dose of fentanyl immediately after he delivered my eulogy at the funeral.

She was going to take the entire two million dollars for herself and frame Dominic's death as a tragic, grief-stricken suicide.

I had the perfect opportunity to walk into that room and end her life right then and there.

Instead, I smiled in the dark, deciding that a private execution was far too merciful for a traitor.

I needed the entire world to witness their destruction in front of a live audience.

I slipped back out of the house, leaving Chloe entirely unaware that she was now nothing more than a dead woman walking.
