Chapter 6 - The Unexpected Ally

The explosive impact threw me violently against the heavy metal partition of the police cruiser.

Shattered glass rained down entirely over the backseat as the cruiser spun wildly out of control.

We slammed hard into a concrete streetlight, and the loud hiss of a deployed airbag filled the ruined cabin.

The corrupt detective in the driver's seat was completely unconscious, his head resting heavily against the steering wheel.

I groaned in immense pain, desperately trying to adjust my handcuffed wrists as smoke poured from the crushed engine.

The door of the black SUV groaned open, and a tall figure stepped out into the chaotic street.

A woman in a sharp, tailored business suit walked purposefully toward the wrecked police car.

She casually carried a heavy tire iron in her right hand, completely unbothered by the destruction around her.

She smashed the tire iron directly through the remaining glass of my window, reaching in to unlock the jammed door.

The woman grabbed me by the collar of my shirt and forcefully hauled me out of the smoking wreckage.

I stumbled onto the pavement, blinking rapidly as I tried to recognize my violent savior.

It was Victoria, my estranged mother, a ruthless corporate defense attorney who had not spoken to me in a decade.

"You always did have terrible taste in partners, Sarah," Victoria said dryly, dusting off her expensive blazer.

She pulled a small, silver key from her pocket and effortlessly unlocked the handcuffs binding my wrists.

I rubbed my bruised skin, completely utterly shocked to see the woman who had abandoned me when I was a teenager.

"How did you even know I was in trouble?" I asked, struggling to catch my breath.

"Nurse Adams managed to send me an emergency text message right before they confiscated her phone," Victoria explained simply.

She grabbed my arm and forcefully dragged me toward a second, sleek town car that had just arrived on the scene.

"We do not have time for a heartfelt family reunion," Victoria warned, pushing me into the luxurious backseat.

"Marcus and Diane have already loaded Lily into a private ambulance bound for a specific hospice facility."

My heart stopped completely as the town car sped away from the accident scene.

A hospice facility meant they were legally preparing to end Lily's life under the guise of terminal cancer care.

"We have to stop that ambulance right now!" I screamed, grabbing the plush leather seat.

Victoria pulled a sleek, encrypted tablet from her briefcase and showed me a live GPS tracking map.

"We are not going to simply stop them, Sarah," my mother smiled, a deeply terrifying and predatory expression forming on her face.

"We are going to utterly destroy their entire criminal syndicate before the sun even comes up."
