Chapter 4 - The Home Invasion

I slammed the office door shut and locked the deadbolt just as the front door handle began to violently rattle.

Marcus began smashing the heavy crowbar against the reinforced glass of our front door.

I sprinted down the hallway to Lily's room, my heart hammering against my ribs like a war drum.

Nurse Adams was already standing defensively in front of Lily's medical bed, holding a heavy metal oxygen tank like a weapon.

I told her exactly who was breaking into the house and what they intended to do.

The shattering of thick glass echoed through the living room, followed by the heavy thud of boots on the hardwood floor.

I quickly dialed 911, screaming our address into the phone and begging for immediate police assistance.

The dispatcher promised that patrol cars were already en route and instructed us to lock ourselves in a safe room.

I dragged a heavy wooden dresser across the bedroom door, barricading us inside with my sleeping child.

Heavy footsteps pounded rapidly down the hallway, stopping directly outside Lily's bedroom.

Diane's voice slithered through the wooden door, completely devoid of any human empathy.

"Open the door, Sarah," Diane demanded, her tone chillingly calm.

"You have absolutely no right to be here, Diane!" I screamed back, pressing my entire body weight against the heavy dresser.

Marcus began laughing, a dark and terrifying sound that brought back years of deeply buried trauma.

"You really think a piece of wood is going to stop me from seeing my own daughter?" Marcus taunted.

The heavy crowbar slammed into the bedroom door, splintering the expensive wood directly near the hinges.

I closed my eyes and prayed for the police sirens to arrive before the door gave way.

Another brutal strike sent chunks of wood flying into the bedroom, narrowly missing Nurse Adams's face.

Marcus reached his hand through the jagged hole, blindly feeling around for the doorknob.

I grabbed a heavy brass lamp from the nightstand and smashed it violently down onto his intruding wrist.

Marcus howled in absolute agony, quickly pulling his bleeding arm back into the hallway.

I heard the distant, beautiful sound of police sirens wailing down our suburban street.

Diane cursed loudly, her footsteps retreating rapidly toward the shattered front door.

The sirens grew deafeningly loud, followed by the screeching of multiple police cruisers stopping on our front lawn.

I let out a massive breath of relief, believing the nightmare was finally over.

But when the police officers kicked down the remains of the front door, they did not arrest Marcus or Diane.

Instead, the lead officer pointed his weapon directly at me and ordered me to get on the ground.
