Chapter 3 - The Shadow Partner

The glowing zero on the banking screen felt like a physical blow to my chest.

I collapsed onto the edge of the hallway sofa, burying my face in my trembling hands.

Diane had not just humiliated my sick child; she had systematically orchestrated our total financial ruin.

I needed to understand why the woman who had helped me pick out Lily's nursery colors had suddenly turned into a monster.

I quietly snuck into Diane's home office, a room she had kept strictly locked for the past three months.

Using a spare key I had hidden years ago, I pushed the heavy oak door open.

The room was meticulously clean, but the paper shredder bin was completely overflowing with sensitive documents.

I dug through the shredded paper, hoping to find a banking receipt or an offshore account number.

Instead, I found a glossy photograph that had fallen behind her large mahogany filing cabinet.

I pulled it out and brushed the dust off the surface.

The photograph showed Diane sitting intimately at a high-end restaurant with a man I prayed I would never see again.

It was Marcus, Lily's biological father.

Marcus had lost all custody rights six years ago after a terrifying pattern of physical abuse and severe gambling addiction.

I had spent thousands of dollars in legal fees to ensure he could never come within a hundred miles of my little girl.

Seeing his face smiling next to my current wife made my blood run entirely cold.

I flipped the photograph over to see if anything was written on the back.

There was a handwritten date from just two weeks ago, alongside a long string of identifying numbers.

I rushed back to my computer and typed the numbers into a public legal database.

The search results loaded, revealing a massive, newly approved life insurance policy.

Marcus had somehow managed to take out a two-million-dollar life insurance policy on Lily's life, despite having no legal custody.

The primary beneficiary listed on the official document was not Marcus.

The money was set to go entirely to an LLC registered under Diane's maiden name.

They were working together to ensure my daughter died from her brain cancer so they could split a massive fortune.

I heard the heavy screech of tires turning quickly back into my driveway.

I peeked through the window blinds and saw Diane's car parked aggressively on the lawn.

Marcus was sitting in the passenger seat, and he was holding a heavy, black crowbar.
