Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The next few days felt like a beautiful, impossible dream after walking through absolute hell.
Diane and Marcus were both formally indicted on federal conspiracy and attempted murder charges without bail.
The corrupt police detective was swiftly fired and federally investigated thanks to Victoria’s relentless legal pressure.
Lily’s highly anticipated brain surgery was completely rescheduled and fully funded by the recovered money.
The oncology team assured me that her chances of a full recovery were significantly higher now that she was receiving the correct medication.
Nurse Adams was released from custody and immediately hired by Victoria to be Lily’s exclusive, highly paid private caretaker.
I sat in the comfortable recliner next to Lily’s hospital bed, watching my daughter finally eat a popsicle without getting sick.
She smiled brightly at me, the vibrant color finally returning to her beautiful, pale cheeks.
"I love you, Mommy," Lily whispered softly, her voice still a bit raspy from the oxygen tubes.
"I love you too, my brave girl," I replied, kissing her gently on the forehead.
I truly believed that the nightmare was completely and permanently over.
Later that evening, Nurse Adams stepped out of the room to grab a fresh blanket from the supply closet.
I stayed behind, quietly organizing the many greeting cards and balloons sent by our supportive community.
As I moved a large bouquet of flowers, I accidentally knocked Nurse Adams's personal cell phone off the side table.
The phone landed face up on the floor, the screen lighting up brightly with a newly received text message.
I reached down to pick it up, casually glancing at the notification banner on the screen.
The text message contained a highly specific, strange sequence of numbers: "44-88-Omega-Execute."
My blood instantly turned to absolute ice in my veins.
It was the exact same encrypted code-word message I had seen on Marcus's burner phone when I was investigating his insurance fraud.
Nurse Adams walked back into the room, holding a clean blanket and smiling warmly at me.
May you like
She noticed her phone in my trembling hand, and her friendly smile slowly morphed into a chilling, dead-eyed smirk.
Nurse Adams reached behind her and slowly, deliberately locked the heavy hospital room door from the inside.
