Chapter 5 - The Corrupt Badge

I slowly raised my hands, completely utterly confused as the police officers swarmed the bedroom.
They forcefully pushed me against the wall, slapping heavy metal handcuffs tightly around my wrists.
"What are you doing?" I cried out, struggling against the tight grip of the aggressive officer.
"You are under arrest for severe child endangerment and medical neglect," the lead detective stated coldly.
I looked frantically toward the hallway, where Diane was standing perfectly unharmed and wiping fake tears from her eyes.
Diane had called the police before she even arrived, claiming I had gone completely insane and was holding our daughter hostage.
She presented the officers with forged medical documents claiming I had been the one tampering with Lily's medication.
Nurse Adams tried to intervene, loudly defending me and explaining the truth about the swapped pills in the trash.
The lead detective sneered and completely ignored the registered medical professional standing right in front of him.
"This nurse is clearly a paid accomplice," the detective announced to his fellow officers.
He ordered his men to arrest Nurse Adams for medical malpractice and interference with a police investigation.
I watched in absolute horror as they dragged the only person capable of caring for my sick child out of the house.
Marcus walked into the bedroom, acting like a deeply concerned biological father checking on his frail daughter.
"Thank God you arrived in time, Detective," Marcus said, shaking the corrupt officer's hand.
I noticed a thick, bulging white envelope discreetly passing from Marcus's hand into the detective's pocket.
The entire police response had been bought and paid for with the GoFundMe money Diane had stolen earlier that afternoon.
They dragged me roughly out to the back of a waiting squad car, shoving me into the cramped, plastic seat.
I screamed for Lily until my throat was entirely raw, begging them not to leave her alone with those monsters.
The corrupt detective slammed the car door shut, silencing my desperate pleas behind thick, bulletproof glass.
I watched through the barred window as Diane and Marcus stood victoriously on my front porch.
They had successfully removed every single obstacle standing between them and the two-million-dollar insurance payout.

The police cruiser began to drive away, taking me further and further from my vulnerable daughter.
Suddenly, a massive black SUV violently ran a red light and T-boned the police cruiser at the upcoming intersection.
