Chapter 9 - The Hidden Camera

The three of them froze completely, their eyes simultaneously darting upward to the ceiling.

Hidden discreetly within the plastic casing of the smoke detector was a tiny, blinking red light.

"What is that?" David asked, his voice suddenly dropping an entire octave in sheer terror.

I walked over to the kitchen counter and picked up my own smartphone, swiping the screen to open a security application.

"I noticed my jewelry going missing about two weeks ago, so I hired a private technician to install hidden cameras in every room," I explained smoothly.

Helen's face turned completely ashen as she realized exactly what was happening.

"The cameras capture high-definition video and incredibly clear audio," I continued, holding the phone up for them to see.

The screen displayed a crystal-clear, live feed of the four of us standing in the living room.

"It recorded you admitting to forging the deed to my house, David," I summarized, checking off the crimes on my fingers.

"It recorded you, Helen, admitting to buying a stolen property and conspiring to kidnap my daughter."

Sarah backed away toward the open front door, her smug confidence entirely vanishing into the humid summer air.

"And it absolutely recorded the fake 911 call you just made, proving exactly how you planned to frame me," I concluded with a wide smile.

David lunged across the room, desperately trying to rip the smartphone out of my hands to delete the evidence.

I easily stepped aside, letting him crash clumsily into the heavy kitchen island.

"Don't bother breaking my phone, David, the footage uploads directly to a secure cloud server every sixty seconds," I informed him cheerfully.

Helen collapsed into the armchair, clutching her chest as if she were experiencing a genuine heart attack.

"You can't do this, we are your family!" Helen gasped, her wealth completely useless against undeniable digital evidence.

"You stopped being my family the moment you tried to steal my child," I replied with absolute, icy conviction.

The distant, wailing sound of approaching police sirens began to echo down the suburban street.

Sarah turned around and sprinted out the front door, abandoning David completely to save herself from federal prison.

"Laura, please, I will give you everything back, just don't show them the footage!" David begged, falling to his knees on the hardwood floor.

I looked down at the pathetic, broken man who had tried to destroy my entire existence just minutes ago.

"The police are already here, David, and I think it is time for them to watch a movie," I whispered coldly.
