Chapter 8 - The Mistress

I stared out the window and finally noticed the sleek black vehicle idling silently near the neighborhood stop sign.

The betrayal cut so deeply that it completely bypassed my heart and settled directly into my bones.

"You planned this entire day with her," I said to David, who couldn't even meet my furious gaze.

David rubbed his face in extreme frustration, turning his anger entirely back onto his mother.

"Call the police right now, Mother, we need to get Laura out of this house before Emma comes downstairs," he demanded aggressively.

Helen proudly dialed the three emergency digits, putting the phone on speaker mode so I could hear my impending doom.

"911, what is your emergency?" the calm dispatcher's voice echoed through the tense living room.

"Yes, I need immediate police assistance at my son's house," Helen stated, utilizing her most distressed, fragile voice.

"My daughter-in-law is having a severe psychotic break, she is violent, and she is threatening to harm her child."

I didn't scream, I didn't beg, and I absolutely didn't try to stop her from completing the fraudulent phone call.

I simply stood near the kitchen island, watching them build the final steps to their own spectacular execution.

"The police are on their way, and they are bringing an ambulance with heavy sedatives," Helen gloated, ending the call.

David walked over to the front door and unlocked it, preparing to welcome the authorities into his theater of lies.

Just as he opened the heavy door, Sarah confidently walked up the front steps, carrying a designer baby bag on her shoulder.

She looked at me with a smug, victorious smile that made my blood boil with intense hatred.

"I told you he always loved me more, Laura," Sarah sneered, stepping gracefully into the entryway of my home.

"Emma will be perfectly fine with us once you are locked away in the hospital."

David wrapped his arm around Sarah's pregnant waist, looking at me with total, undeniable contempt.

"Just go quietly, Laura, and I promise I will bring Emma to visit you during the holidays," David offered generously.

I looked at the three monsters standing in my living room, deeply inhaling the sweet scent of impending victory.

"I think you should all look up at the smoke detector directly above the television," I suggested calmly, pointing toward the ceiling.
