Chapter 7 - The Secret Family

The sudden shift in the room's dynamic was entirely unexpected, even to my traitorous husband.

Helen walked over to the large bay window, pulling the curtain aside to look out at the quiet, sunlit street.

"You really are a fool, David, if you thought I was spending four million dollars just to clean up your financial mess," Helen sneered.

David set his bourbon glass down on the counter, his face completely draining of all color.

"We had an agreement, Mother," he stammered, stepping cautiously toward the older woman.

"I give you the house and full legal custody of Emma, and you give me the offshore accounts to start my new life."

I listened to his pathetic confession, absolutely disgusted by the price he had placed on our daughter's head.

Helen laughed cruelly, letting the heavy curtain fall back into place.

"There are no offshore accounts, David, you are just as broke today as you were six months ago," Helen revealed.

David lunged forward, grabbing his mother by the shoulders with a look of pure, unadulterated panic.

"You promised me the money so I could take Sarah and the baby to Europe!" David screamed, entirely forgetting that I was standing in the room.

The name dropped like a heavy stone into the middle of the tense, suffocating silence.

"Sarah?" I whispered, my voice barely audible over the roaring sound in my ears.

Sarah was supposed to be my absolute best friend in the world, the woman I confided in about my marital struggles.

David froze, realizing he had just handed me the missing piece of his disgusting puzzle.

"You have a child with my best friend?" I asked, tears of pure rage finally spilling over my cheeks.

Helen pushed David away with a look of intense maternal disgust.

"Yes, he does, and Sarah is currently sitting in the black SUV parked at the end of the block," Helen announced proudly.

"Sarah understands that a child belongs in a wealthy, structured environment, unlike you."

I looked at the front door, realizing they had brought my cheating best friend here to replace me on the very same day.

"You are going to let Sarah raise my daughter?" I asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous, deadly whisper.

Helen smiled, pulling her expensive smartphone out of her designer handbag.

"Yes, we are, right after I call the police to come and take you to the psychiatric ward," Helen declared confidently.
