Chapter 5 - The Mastermind Arrives

The absolute conviction in David's voice made the entire world spin dangerously around me.
He was standing on our front lawn, looking me dead in the eye, and seamlessly executing a psychological attack.
"I did not write that letter, David, and you know perfectly well that I am completely sane!" I shouted desperately.
Helen bent down, gently guiding Emma toward the open front door of the house.
"Go upstairs and start packing your favorite toys, sweetie, the adults need to have a serious talk," Helen instructed softly.
I moved to block the doorway, refusing to let my daughter out of my immediate sight.
"Emma is not going anywhere, and she is certainly not moving into your house," I declared firmly.
David grabbed my arm, his fingers digging painfully into my skin as he forcibly pulled me away from the door.
"Let the child pack, Laura, we are trying to make this transition as easy for her as possible," David hissed.
Emma slipped past me, her eyes cast downward as she ran up the wooden stairs to her bedroom.
The moment she was out of earshot, the entire atmosphere in the living room shifted into something incredibly dark and dangerous.
Helen walked in, closed the heavy front door behind her, and locked the deadbolt with a loud, metallic click.
She walked over to my favorite armchair, sat down gracefully, and crossed her legs like a queen surveying her newly conquered kingdom.
"We can do this the easy way, or we can do this the incredibly painful way," Helen announced with a chilling smile.
I ripped my arm out of David's painful grip and backed away from both of them.
"You are both completely insane if you think you can just steal my child and kick me out of my own home," I warned them.
David sighed, pulling a thick manila envelope out of his leather briefcase and tossing it onto the coffee table.
"The house is no longer yours, Laura, and it hasn't been yours for over six months," David stated coldly.
I stared at the envelope, my heart pounding violently against my ribs as the puzzle pieces finally began to connect.

Helen leaned forward, her eyes gleaming with absolute malicious triumph.
"David forged your signature on the deed transfer last winter and sold the entire property directly to me," Helen revealed.
