Chapter 4 - The Fake Letter

I stared at the folded pink paper in Emma's small hand, completely paralyzed by the sheer audacity of their cruelty.

"Emma, please let me see that paper," I begged, my voice cracking under the intense emotional weight of the moment.

Helen tightened her grip on my daughter's shoulders, her perfectly manicured nails digging slightly into the denim fabric.

"Don't give it to her, Emma, she will just tear it up and pretend it never existed," Helen warned smoothly.

I stood up, wiping the tears from my face, and glared at the monstrous woman who had birthed my husband.

"Give me the letter, Helen, or I am calling the police right now," I demanded, stepping aggressively toward them.

Helen scoffed, snatching the paper from Emma's hand and shoving it directly into my chest.

I unfolded the delicate pink stationery, instantly recognizing the custom letterhead I had ordered for my home business years ago.

The handwriting on the page was a terrifyingly perfect forgery of my own distinct cursive script.

The letter explicitly stated that I was abandoning my family to start a new life across the country with a wealthy secret lover.

It even included a heartbreaking final sentence claiming I never truly wanted to be a mother in the first place.

"You actually showed this vile garbage to an eight-year-old child?" I screamed, entirely losing my composure.

Emma covered her ears, shrinking back against her grandmother as my voice echoed across the quiet street.

Before Helen could respond, a dark sedan pulled into the driveway behind her silver car.

David stepped out of his vehicle, wearing a sharp business suit and looking completely unbothered by the screaming match on his front lawn.

"What is going on out here?" David asked, walking slowly toward us with his hands in his pockets.

I ran toward him, shoving the forged pink letter violently against his expensive silk tie.

"Your deranged mother faked a goodbye letter from me and convinced our daughter that I am abandoning her!" I yelled hysterically.

David took the paper, glancing at it for a mere fraction of a second before letting it fall to the grass.

He looked at Emma, then looked back at me with an expression of deep, manufactured pity.

"It is not a fake letter, Laura," David said, his voice loud enough for the neighbors to hear.

"You have been sick for a very long time, and you wrote that letter last night during one of your episodes."
