Chapter 6 - The Ugly Truth

The living room suddenly felt entirely devoid of oxygen as the magnitude of their betrayal crashed over me.
"You forged my signature on a real estate deed?" I asked, staring at the man I had slept next to for a decade.
David walked over to the home bar, casually pouring himself a glass of expensive bourbon.
"I had to do it, Laura, because my investment firm went completely bankrupt last year and we were drowning in secret debt," he confessed smoothly.
"Mother agreed to pay off my millions of dollars in corporate loans, but she had a few very specific conditions."
I looked at Helen, who was inspecting her perfect fingernails with an air of absolute boredom.
"You bought my house to save your pathetic son from going to federal prison," I summarized bitterly.
"Oh, I didn't just buy the house, dear," Helen corrected, looking up with a predatory grin.
"I bought the exclusive rights to raise my granddaughter without your constant, suffocating middle-class influence."
I felt a wave of intense nausea wash over me as I realized this was never just about financial greed.
This was a calculated, long-term strategy to systematically erase me from my own family.
"You can't just buy a child, Helen, the courts will never allow you to get away with this," I argued frantically.
David laughed, a cold, empty sound that echoed off the high ceilings of our stolen home.
"That is exactly why we created the fake medical records and the suicide letter," David explained, taking a sip of his drink.
"When the police arrive, they will find a hysterical, violent woman who has clearly lost her grip on reality."
"They will place you on an involuntary psychiatric hold, and I will be granted emergency custody immediately."
I backed away toward the kitchen, my mind racing as I calculated the physical distance to the back door.
"You are going to hand full custody over to your mother," I whispered, finally seeing the entire horrifying picture.
Helen stood up, smoothing the wrinkles from her expensive designer skirt.
"Actually, David isn't going to be involved in Emma's life very much either," Helen corrected sharply.

David's arrogant smile instantly vanished, and he looked at his mother in genuine confusion.
"What do you mean by that, Mother?" David asked, his voice suddenly trembling with uncertainty.
