Chapter 8 - The Digital Frame-Up

I refused to let Mark get away with this, so I immediately hired a fierce, highly recommended pro bono lawyer named Sarah.
We marched into the emergency family court hearing the next morning, armed with the photographs of the life insurance policy and the police report from the hospital attack.
Mark sat calmly at the defendant's table, wearing a crisp, conservative suit and looking like the absolute picture of a grieving, concerned father.
His high-priced, slick defense attorney stood up and painted a masterful, disgusting portrait of me as an unstable, hysterical woman.
The lawyer argued that the man in the hospital was a known, deranged addict targeting random rooms, and the insurance policy was simply a responsible college fund alternative.
The judge, an older man with a stern face, looked down at me with clear skepticism, demanding definitive, undeniable proof of Mark's malice.
Sarah stood up confidently and presented our trump card to the court.
She handed the judge a printed email that we had subpoenaed from the hospital's IT department that morning.
The email clearly showed a message sent to Dr. Evans five weeks ago, explicitly canceling the ultrasound and bribing a lab technician to alter the preliminary scan results.
I smiled, finally feeling a surge of hope that this nightmare was coming to an end.
Mark didn't look scared; instead, a slow, sickening smirk crept across his face as he leaned back in his leather chair.
His lawyer stood up, feigning a look of deep, theatrical disappointment.
"Your Honor, we fully agree that this email is the smoking gun of this entire tragic case," the lawyer announced smoothly.
He pulled a thick, certified digital forensic report from his briefcase and slammed it aggressively onto the judge's bench.

"This IP log officially certifies that the bribing email was not sent from my client's phone," the lawyer declared loudly.
"It was sent from the IP address of the plaintiff's own personal laptop, proving that Elena Vance framed her husband to cover up her own medical abuse."
