Chapter 1 - The First Betrayal

The silence in the small examination room felt heavy enough to crush my lungs.

Dr. Evans kept his eyes locked on mine, waiting for the devastating reality to sink in.

I looked over at my fifteen-year-old daughter, Chloe, who was pulling her hoodie sleeves down so far they completely covered her trembling hands.

My husband had known she was in excruciating pain for over a month and had done absolutely nothing to help her.

Actually, doing nothing would have been better than what he actually did.

He had actively gaslit our child, convinced her that her agony was a cry for attention, and strictly forbidden her from telling me.

Dr. Evans turned back to his computer monitor and let out a heavy sigh.

"The imaging shows a rapidly growing mass on her right ovary, and it has started to cause partial torsion," the doctor explained in a grave tone.

"If we do not address this immediately, the ovary will twist completely, cutting off the blood supply and causing irreversible tissue death."

My vision blurred with hot, angry tears as the sheer magnitude of Mark's betrayal washed over me.

"When Mark brought her in five weeks ago, the mass was a fraction of this size," Dr. Evans continued, his voice laced with professional frustration.

"I explicitly ordered an emergency follow-up ultrasound for the very next day, but he called and canceled it."

Chloe let out a small, broken sob from the examination table.

I rushed to her side, wrapping my arms tightly around her small shoulders and pressing a kiss to the top of her head.

"You are safe now, sweetheart, and we are going to fix this right away," I promised her fiercely.

Dr. Evans nodded and stated he was going to start the admission paperwork immediately to get her prepped for emergency surgery.

He advised me to step out into the hallway to make any necessary phone calls and gather my thoughts.

I walked out of the room, my hands shaking violently as I pulled my cell phone from my purse.

I needed to call a lawyer, pack a bag, and figure out how to legally ban my husband from this hospital.

As I dialed my sister's number, I wandered over to the large glass window at the end of the corridor.

I looked down at the rainy hospital parking lot, trying to catch my breath.

Suddenly, a familiar black pickup truck aggressively pulled into a spot right near the emergency entrance.

My blood ran absolutely cold.

It was Mark.

I had not told a single soul where we were going, yet he was already here, slamming his car door and marching toward the building with a furious look on his face.
