Chapter 2 - The Interception

I sprinted away from the window and rushed toward the elevators, desperate to intercept him before he reached Chloe's floor.
My heart hammered violently against my ribs with every step I took.
I reached the main lobby just as the elevator doors began to slide open.
Mark stepped out, his face flushed red with a terrifying, barely contained rage.
"What the hell do you think you're doing, Elena?" he snapped, grabbing my forearm tightly.
I ripped my arm out of his grasp and stood my ground in the middle of the crowded lobby.
"I'm saving our daughter's life, Mark, no thanks to you," I shot back, my voice shaking with pure venom.
He let out a cruel, condescending laugh that made my stomach churn.
"The school nurse called me when you signed her out, since I am the primary emergency contact," he hissed, leaning in close to my face.
"You are embarrassing our family and wasting money we do not have on her pathetic little attention-seeking games."
I stared at the man I had been married to for sixteen years, realizing I did not know him at all.
"She has a massive tumor that is twisting her ovary, Mark," I yelled, not caring who in the lobby heard me.
A few nurses at the triage desk turned their heads, their expressions shifting to concern.
Mark's eyes darted around the room nervously, realizing he was losing control of the narrative.
"I am her father, and I do not consent to any unnecessary medical procedures," he stated coldly.
"I am going upstairs right now to discharge her, and you are going to drive us home."
"If you take one step toward that elevator, I will scream for security and have you arrested for child endangerment," I threatened, pulling my phone out to dial 911.
Mark glared at me with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred.
He slowly backed away toward the automatic sliding glass doors, but not before pointing a finger directly at my chest.
"You just made the biggest mistake of your miserable life, Elena," he whispered darkly.
He turned and stormed out of the hospital, leaving me trembling in the lobby.
I took a deep breath, relieved that I had successfully protected her.
I turned around and ran back to the elevators, desperately needing to hold my daughter again.

When I finally pushed open the heavy wooden door to Chloe's hospital room, my heart stopped completely.
The bed sheets were violently ripped off the mattress, the IV stand was knocked over, and the room was entirely empty.
