Chapter 4 - The Legal Trap

I stood frozen in the stairwell, staring at the zeros on my banking app while my daughter leaned heavily against my side.
Mark had not just hidden her medical condition; he had been meticulously planning this financial ambush for a long time.
I shoved the phone into my pocket, refusing to let Chloe see the sheer panic washing over my face.
"Everything is fine, honey," I lied smoothly, guiding her back up the stairs toward the pediatric surgical ward.
Once I got her settled back into bed with a fresh IV line, I slipped out into the hallway to find the hospital social worker.
A kind woman named Sarah listened to my nightmare and immediately helped me apply for emergency charity care to bypass the financial block.
Dr. Evans was absolutely furious when he heard about Mark's actions, and he aggressively expedited the surgery schedule.
He slated Chloe for the very first operating slot at six o'clock the next morning.
I sat in the uncomfortable vinyl chair next to her bed all night, watching her chest rise and fall, vowing to destroy the man who did this to her.
When the morning sun finally broke through the hospital blinds, a team of surgical nurses wheeled in a stretcher.
Chloe squeezed my hand tightly, offering me a brave, tired smile as they prepared to move her.
Before they could unlock the wheels of her bed, a tall woman in a sharp gray suit marched into the room.
She held a thick stack of manila folders and looked directly at me with cold, calculating eyes.
"Are you Elena Vance?" the woman asked sharply.
"Yes, but we are right in the middle of a medical transport," I replied, stepping between her and my daughter.
The woman did not blink as she shoved the heavy stack of legal documents forcefully into my chest.
"You have been officially served," she stated in a monotonous voice.
I looked down at the bold, black letters printed on the front page of the legal petition.
Mark had filed an emergency ex parte restraining order against me in the middle of the night.

The document claimed I suffered from severe Munchausen syndrome by proxy and was maliciously forcing our healthy daughter to undergo unnecessary organ surgery.
Because a judge had signed the emergency temporary order, my medical consent was completely suspended.
