Chapter 9 - The Final Standoff

David stood up slowly, keeping the suppressed pistol leveled directly at my head.
He smiled arrogantly, explaining that my father had easily bribed the corrupt hospital security to let him go.
He had anticipated our escape route and boarded the private jet hours before we even arrived at the airfield.
David calmly ordered the flight nurse to step away from Ben and move toward the front of the cabin.
He stated that the corporation was still willing to pay millions for the twins, even if they had to be extracted mid-flight.
I felt a cold, paralyzing fear wash over me as I realized we were trapped miles above the earth with a ruthless killer.
David took a step closer to Rosie, reaching his free hand toward the peacefully sleeping newborn babies.
Ben suddenly groaned in agony, intentionally knocking a heavy medical tray onto the floor to create a loud distraction.
David instinctively glanced down at the clattering metal tools, completely taking his eyes off me for a fraction of a second.
I unbuckled my seatbelt and launched myself across the narrow aisle with the ferocity of a protective mother bear.
I slammed my body into David's chest, knocking him violently backward against the emergency exit door.
The pistol fired a wild, suppressed shot that shattered the small plastic window completely.
A deafening roar filled the cabin as the sudden depressurization began sucking the oxygen violently out of the plane.
The extreme change in pressure threw us both to the floor, struggling to breathe in the chaotic, freezing air.
David recovered quickly, raising the gun again with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred burning in his eyes.
Before he could pull the trigger, Rosie suddenly opened her eyes, finally waking from her deep, medically induced slumber.
She grabbed a heavy metal oxygen tank from the wall mount and swung it with all her remaining strength.
The heavy cylinder struck David squarely in the back of the head, instantly knocking him completely unconscious.
I scrambled across the floor, grabbed the dropped pistol, and pointed it at the motionless traitor.

The pilot initiated a rapid, terrifying emergency descent, diving the plane toward a safe altitude where we could finally breathe.
We had survived the absolute worst of the nightmare, and the villains were finally, completely defeated.
