Chapter 4 - The Ultimate Betrayal

I stared at the barrel of David's gun, utterly unable to comprehend what I was seeing.
The man I had loved and planned to marry was standing guard for the very monsters trying to destroy my sister.
David stepped into the harsh overhead light, his face completely devoid of the warmth I thought I knew.
He calmly explained that my parents had recruited him years ago to keep a close watch on me.
He was the corporate liaison for the shadowy genetic research firm purchasing the twins.
My entire relationship with him had been a carefully orchestrated illusion to ensure my compliance.
I felt violently sick to my stomach as the sheer magnitude of his deception washed over me.
David demanded that Ben drop the fire ax and step away from the laboratory doors immediately.
Ben slowly lowered the heavy tool, keeping his eyes locked fiercely on David's weapon.
David chuckled darkly, bragging about how easily he had manipulated my emotions for a generous corporate paycheck.
He told us that the twins were going to change the future of modern genetic medicine.
He raised the gun higher and stated that we were unfortunately loose ends that needed to be permanently tied up.
I knew that begging this ruthless stranger for mercy would be a complete waste of time.
I looked desperately at Ben, hoping he had one last impossible plan hidden up his sleeve.
Ben subtly shifted his weight, his eyes darting toward the overhead sprinkler system lining the ceiling.
Without a single word of warning, Ben hurled the heavy fire ax straight upward into the main water pipe.
The metal pipe ruptured explosively, sending a massive, blinding torrent of high-pressure water blasting down onto the corridor.
The sudden deluge caught David completely off guard, causing him to slip and fire a wild shot into the concrete wall.
The entire hallway erupted into pure chaos as the deafening fire alarms instantly triggered.
Ben grabbed my hand, and we charged blindly through the cascading water directly toward David.
I slammed my shoulder into David's chest, knocking the weapon out of his slippery hands.

The gun skittered across the wet linoleum, sliding far out of reach under a heavy supply cart.
David grabbed my throat, his eyes wide with unhinged fury as he slammed me against the wall.
