Chapter 9 - The Final Struggle

My brother held the red detonator switch high in the air for all the federal agents to see.

He proudly declared that the entire foundation of the house was wired with highly unstable, military-grade explosives.

My mother shrieked in absolute horror, realizing her beloved son had been perfectly willing to blow her up while she slept inside.

The lead FBI agent ordered his men to hold their fire, knowing a single bullet could cause my brother's thumb to depress the trigger.

The tension in the backyard was thick enough to choke on as my brother slowly backed toward the open sliding glass door.

I knew that if he retreated into the house, we would never be able to stop him from destroying the evidence and killing innocent people.

I did not wait for the federal negotiators to attempt a peaceful resolution.

I sprinted across the wet patio concrete with every single ounce of strength I had left in my exhausted body.

I launched myself through the air and tackled my brother violently around his waist.

We crashed backward directly into the sharp remnants of the shattered glass table that had injured my sister.

The brutal impact knocked the breath completely out of his lungs, causing his grip on the device to loosen.

The detonator slipped from his hand and skidded across the wet concrete, stopping near the edge of the pool.

An FBI agent dove across the patio and safely secured the device before it could be activated.

Two massive federal agents ripped my brother off of me and slammed him face-first onto the deck.

The heavy steel handcuffs clicked loudly around his wrists, permanently ending his reign of absolute terror.

My mother was also placed in handcuffs, weeping uncontrollably as she was aggressively escorted to a waiting federal transport vehicle.

I laid on the cold patio, staring up at the cloudy night sky, finally feeling a profound sense of absolute relief.
