Chapter 6 - The Midnight Infiltration

I borrowed a dark, tactical jacket and a quiet, unmarked electric vehicle from my grandfather's security fleet.

I drove back to the familiar suburban neighborhood, parking three streets away to avoid detection.

The night was incredibly still, and the heavy cloud cover perfectly obscured the bright moonlight.

I crept through the familiar back alleys until I reached the tall wooden fence surrounding my mother's property.

I knew my brother had installed cheap motion sensors on the main gate, so I climbed over a weak section of the fence near the old oak tree.

I dropped silently onto the damp grass of the backyard, keeping my body low to the ground.

The house was completely dark, but my brother's expensive sports car was still parked proudly in the driveway.

I moved cautiously onto the wet concrete of the patio, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

The ruined, water-stained cushions were still sitting exactly where we had left them on the luxury chairs.

I knelt beside the largest cushion and quickly found the hidden zipper tucked under the fabric seam.

I slid my hand inside the cold, wet foam, desperately searching for the tiny plastic device.

My fingers brushed against a small, hard object wrapped in a protective plastic baggie.

I pulled it out, feeling a massive wave of relief wash over me as I secured the flash drive in my pocket.

I turned around to begin my silent escape back over the wooden fence.

Suddenly, the entire backyard was illuminated by the blinding, harsh glare of professional stadium floodlights.

I threw my hand up to shield my eyes, temporarily blinded by the intense illumination.

My brother stepped casually out through the sliding glass doors onto the wooden deck.

He was holding a suppressed, high-powered hunting rifle, and the laser sight was pointed directly at my chest.
