Chapter 1 - The Secret Evidence

Mom looked down at the expensive smartphone resting in the palm of her hand.
She squinted against the harsh afternoon sun as she scrolled through the family text thread.
My brother stood nearby with his arms crossed, wearing a smug, victorious smile.
He had already convinced her that my sister was a dramatic child trying to ruin his new patio furniture.
Then, my sister bravely told Mom to open the hidden photo gallery locked behind a password.
Mom typed in the passcode, and I watched her facial expression shift instantly.
The pictures on the screen were not just images of a simple backyard accident.
They were a series of rapid burst photos showing my brother deliberately shoving our sister into the sharp edge of the glass table.
He had caused the massive, bleeding gash on her leg on purpose.
I waited for the maternal instinct to kick in, expecting Mom to scream at him for harming his sibling.
Instead, her eyes darted nervously between my brother and the glowing screen.
She tapped the options menu in the top corner of the application.
Without a single word of hesitation, she pressed the delete button and completely erased the entire album.
I stared at her in absolute shock as she handed the phone back to my sister.
Mom sighed heavily and claimed that the photos were misleading and completely out of context.
She told my sister to stop making up vicious lies to seek attention.
My brother chuckled, stepping forward to casually wipe a drop of water off his pristine outdoor cushion.
He confidently told Mom that I had actually been the one to spray the hose maliciously.
Mom turned toward me with a look of cold, uncompromising rage.
She raised her hand and slapped me across the face so hard my vision blurred.
She pointed toward the back door and ordered me to pack my bags immediately.
She declared that I was permanently evicted from the house for terrorizing my own family.
I looked down at my little sister, who was silently weeping and clutching her soaked, bleeding bandage.
I suddenly realized that my mother and brother were actively conspiring to protect a massive, horrifying secret.
If I left this house alone, my sister would not survive the week.
I grabbed my sister's good hand and sprinted toward the wooden backyard gate.

My brother let out a sharp, piercing whistle that echoed through the neighborhood.
Two massive, aggressive guard dogs stepped out of the open garage door, baring their teeth and completely blocking our only escape route.
