Chapter 7 - The Armed Confrontation

My brother smiled a twisted, arrogant smile as he aimed the lethal weapon directly at my heart.

He slowly walked down the wooden stairs, his finger resting dangerously on the trigger.

He mockingly congratulated me on being stupid enough to return to the scene of the crime completely alone.

He explained that he knew about the hidden flash drive all along, and he had simply left it there as the perfect bait.

He confidently stated that he was going to shoot me and claim it was a terrified act of self-defense against a deranged home intruder.

My mother stepped out onto the deck behind him, tightening her expensive silk bathrobe around her waist.

She looked down at me with absolutely zero maternal affection, only cold, calculated greed.

She told me that I was always a disappointment, and my death was a necessary sacrifice to secure their luxurious future.

I stood perfectly still, my mind racing for any possible way out of this deadly trap.

I tried to appeal to my brother's logic, warning him that my grandfather knew everything and would hunt him to the ends of the earth.

My brother laughed a cruel, psychotic laugh, dismissing our grandfather as an old, powerless relic of the past.

He raised the rifle to his shoulder and closed one eye to secure his aim on my center mass.

I braced myself for the final, agonizing impact.

He squeezed the trigger, but the sound that followed was not the crack of a suppressed rifle.

It was the sudden, deafening blare of a military-grade sonic siren echoing directly above our heads.
