Chapter 2 - The Empty Desk

Sarah dropped her smartphone onto her office desk, her heart hammering violently against her ribs.
She grabbed her car keys and sprinted wildly out of the corporate building, completely ignoring her boss calling her name.
She drove recklessly through the busy city streets, running two red lights in her desperate rush to reach the elementary school.
She burst through the heavy front doors of the building and ran straight down the polished hallway to room 204.
The classroom door was wide open, but the room was completely and utterly empty.
Sarah rushed frantically to the main administrative office, demanding to know where her son and his teacher had gone.
Principal Vance adjusted his expensive glasses and looked at her with an expression of deep, unsettling confusion.
"Mrs. Miller, your son was legally signed out of school over twenty minutes ago," the principal stated calmly.
Sarah slammed her hands aggressively on the front counter, screaming that she never authorized anyone to take Logan.
The principal turned his glowing computer monitor around to show her the digital sign-out sheet.
"He was picked up by his father, David Miller," the principal explained with a completely straight face.
Sarah felt the entire room spin violently as all the blood drained rapidly from her head.
"My husband died in a horrific car crash three years ago," Sarah whispered in pure, paralyzing horror.

Principal Vance slowly smiled, reached under his desk, and pressed a silent security alarm.
"Then you should be thrilled that he has finally returned from the dead, Sarah."
