Chapter 9 - The Impossible Choice

Marcus kicked the study door shut behind him, a manic, unhinged smile stretched across his bruised face.

He ordered me to drop the silver revolver and kick it across the floor if I wanted the federal agent to live.

I hesitated, knowing that surrendering my only weapon would leave me completely defenseless against his madness.

Marcus pressed the sharp edge of the blade deeper into the agent’s neck, drawing a thin, terrifying line of blood.

I slowly lowered the revolver and kicked it toward the heavy oak desk, just out of Helena's reach.

Marcus forced the bleeding agent to his knees and pulled a fresh, pre-written legal document from his tactical vest.

He threw the paper onto the floor, demanding that I sign a full confession taking responsibility for Clara's fake death.

He revealed that his mercenaries had finally tracked Elias and Clara to the abandoned downtown parking garage.

Marcus coldly stated that his men were standing by with a sniper rifle aimed directly at my newborn son.

He gave me exactly sixty seconds to sign the confession and shoot the FBI agent with the revolver, or my family would be slaughtered.

My heart hammered against my ribs as the impossible weight of the choice completely paralyzed my mind.

Helena struggled against her leather restraints, laughing triumphantly at my total defeat.

I slowly bent down, picked up the pen, and stared at the fake confession that would destroy my life forever.

I looked at the federal agent, mouthing the word "sorry" as I reached toward the silver revolver on the floor.

The agent suddenly looked up at me with a fiercely intense stare, completely devoid of any fear.

The "FBI agent" reached into his own coat, pulled the pin from a hidden flashbang grenade, and screamed at me to close my eyes.
