Chapter 5 - The Siege

The heavy mechanical sounds of weapons being loaded echoed through the security monitors.

Elias immediately killed the main lights, plunging the underground clinic into near-complete darkness.

He tossed me a heavy steel wrench and told me to watch the reinforced door while he prepared an escape route.

Clara sobbed quietly in the dark, apologizing for dragging me into her family's twisted nightmare.

I kissed her forehead and promised her that we were all going to walk out of this basement together.

The sound of a heavy battering ram slammed against the steel entrance, shaking dust from the concrete ceiling.

Elias frantically pulled aside a heavy medical cabinet, revealing a rusted iron grate leading into the city's old storm drain system.

He managed to pry the grate open just as the reinforced clinic door began to buckle and warp inward.

I dragged several large oxygen tanks toward the entrance, placing them directly in the path of the doorway.

As the mercenaries finally breached the door and stormed into the room with tactical flashlights, I threw my wrench with blinding speed.

The wrench struck the valve of the main oxygen tank, snapping it off and filling the room with highly flammable gas.

I grabbed a medical flare from the desk, ignited it, and tossed it into the center of the room as I dove into the tunnel.

A massive explosion ripped through the clinic, sending a shockwave of heat and debris over our heads.

The blast instantly incapacitated the strike team and collapsed the entrance, buying us crucial time.

We crawled through the damp, pitch-black storm drain, guided only by the faint light of Elias's cell phone.

The air was foul, and the freezing water soaked through our clothes as we desperately pushed forward.

Clara suddenly stopped crawling and let out a blood-curdling scream that echoed off the tunnel walls.

She clutched her stomach, looking down as a warm pool of fluid completely soaked the front of her dress.

Her water had just broken, and the baby was coming three months early in the middle of a sewer.
