Chapter 2 - The Escape

The heavy wooden doors of the chapel suddenly rattled as someone tried to open them from the outside.
I knew that if the corrupt police chief entered the room, neither Clara nor I would ever leave alive.
I grabbed a heavy red fire extinguisher from the wall bracket and turned back to the Vale family.
Marcus charged at me with a furious scream, completely abandoning his wealthy, sophisticated persona.
I swung the metal cylinder and struck him squarely in the chest, sending him collapsing to the floor.
Helena shrieked in horror and rushed to her son’s side, screaming that she would see me dead.
I pulled the safety pin on the extinguisher and sprayed a massive cloud of thick white foam directly at Dr. Crane and the attendants.
The room instantly filled with blinding chemicals, causing everyone to cough violently and stumble blindly.
I grabbed the handle of the wheeled coffin gurney and sprinted toward the chapel's rear exit.
We burst through the heavy metal doors into the cold, pouring rain of the back alley.
I abandoned the gurney, scooped my pregnant wife into my arms, and ran toward my rusted pickup truck.
Clara groaned in pain, clutching her swollen belly as the freezing rain soaked her white dress.
I gently placed her in the passenger seat and locked the door behind her.
I jumped behind the steering wheel, jammed the key into the ignition, and forced the engine to roar to life.
I slammed my foot onto the gas pedal, tearing out of the alleyway just as the police chief burst through the back doors with his gun drawn.
I drove wildly into the dark city streets, checking my rearview mirror to ensure we were not being followed.
I let out a massive sigh of relief, telling Clara that we were finally safe and heading to a real hospital.
As we approached a sharp, downhill intersection, I pressed my foot down on the brake pedal to slow the heavy truck.
May you like
The pedal went completely straight to the floorboard without the slightest bit of resistance.
I frantically pumped the brakes again and again, but I quickly realized someone had completely severed the brake lines.
